January Meeting

When George Washington Carver School (GWCS) in Indianapolis was built in 1935, boiler room excavation inadvertently intercepted an underground spring. Ever since, sump pumps ran continuously to remove approximately 150 gpm of ground water from the school’s basement. Durkin & Villalta Partners Engineering (www.dvpe.net) utilized this spring water in central plant geothermal system and turned a significant liability into a valuable asset. The central plant geothermal system utilized at (GWCS) is a prime example of the next generation of geothermal systems. It is a synthesis of three technologies that separately have proven to be effective: geothermal (earth-coupled) heating and cooling; dedicated heat recovery chillers; and the modern two-pipe HVAC system. From two-pipe HVAC, comes economy and simplicity for school designs. From dedicated heat recovery chillers comes a proven machine that can simultaneously produce cooling and heating water. And, from geothermal, comes an efficient heating and cooling source. Come to our meeting in January to discuss these exciting, energy efficient systems. Thomas Durkin , vice-president and COO of Durkin & Villalta Partners Engineering (www.dvpe.net), will be giving a presentation based on his years of experience designing these systems for schools. Mr. Durkin has written many articles for the ASHRAE journal (www.dvpe.net/articles.html) and other publications. Durkin & Villalta, based out of Indianapolis, is a multi-award winning (www.dvpe.net/projects.html) MEP design firm with projects from schools to municipal to commercial.

SOUTH BEND LUNCH MEETING - November 19
For the lunch meeting, Louis van Belle of R.L. Millies & Associates will be giving a presentation on the Indiana Energy code. Indiana is looking to adopt ASHRAE 90.1-2007 as it's energy code to meet federal requirements. Mr. van Belle will be reviewing the process for new code adoption in the State of Indiana. He will also be reviewing the new envelope and mechanical efficiency requirements and the fiscal impact for new construction project of these requirements. Mr. van Belle is a licensed design engineer. He has been working at R.L. Millies for the past 5 years. He graduated from the University of Washington with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. Currently he is the president of the chapter.

CALUMET DINNER MEETING - November 19
For the dinner meeting, we'll be learning about energy recovery ventilators. With IAQ concerns in every facility and energy prices on the rise, what is a HVAC system designer to do? Energy recovery systems can bring in code required outside air and save energy doing it. Attendees will learn about key applications appropriate for using energy recovery, the different types of energy recovery equipment, how to select an energy recovery wheel, and how to calculate energy savings and ROI. The new ASHRAE 90.1 (addendum e) and ASHRAE 189.1 requirements for ERVs will also be discussed, as will Chicago code considerations.

Ryan Hoger is a Product Manager at HVAC Solutions, a TEC company. Mr. Hoger has been with TEC since 1997. He is the recent past president of the Illinois ASHRAE Chapter, which is the largest (1,000+ members) in the world. Ryan is actively in involved in several ASHRAE and USGBC committees and he is a LEED Accredited Professional. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Two Professional Development Hours (PDH) for State of Illinois PEs can be earned by attending the Calumet meeting.

First off, in South Bend at Tippecanoe Place, there will be an introductory presentation on the new LEED 2009 standard. Rico Cedro will be presenting. Mr. Cedro is an associate principal and director of sustainable design at Kruek & Sexton. He initiated, developed and lead the firm’s expertise in sustainable design, integrating the firm’s modernist tradition of design excellence with LEED and other green practices for master planning, urban design, architecture and interiors. He directed major projects and client accounts, such as Herman Miller, Inc., University of Chicago and Clear Channel Adshel. Mr. Cedro has also been a member of the LEED Faculty with the USGBC. Through this program he has taught public and private workshops on LEED New Construction and LEED Commercial Interiors.

Subject: Update on ASHRAE Standard 90.1 adoption in Indiana and call for help

Dear ASHRAE folks in Indiana. You may have gotten word that the state of Indiana is moving on a rulemaking to adopt ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007 as part of the state’s agreement to receive ARRA stimulus funding.

At its meeting on August 4 the building commission instructed staff to include the amendments from Eli Lilly in the proposed ASHRAE rule and decided not to go with the IABO proposal to use the IECC. Mara Snyder hopes to publish the proposed rule and fiscal impact in mid-September and schedule a public hearing for late October. There may also be another meeting in mid-August to discuss the details of a fiscal impact analysis.

The current proposals for the Indiana energy code can be found at: http://www.in.gov/dhs/2375.htm

The fiscal impact analysis, according to the commission’s interpretation of state law, needs to account for the building costs involved in moving from the current state energy code (the 1992 MEC) to ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007.

According to commission staff, the following 4 building type scenarios are proposed for the energy and economic analysis:

1. 50,000 sq. ft. strip mall, mixed M and A-2 or A-3 occupancies; single story - Hamilton County

2. 500,000 sq. ft. high school, 3 stories, with gymnasium, cafeteria and auditorium - Gibson County

3. 800,000 sq. ft. hospital, 5 stories, with adjacent 3 story open parking garage - St. Joseph County

4. 20,000 sq. ft church, 2 stories, sanctuary + classrooms and a fellowship hall - Jefferson County

NOTE: Please assume that all buildings are of the least restrictive construction type permitted for the described use and that they are “plain vanilla” designs, rather than aesthetically pleasing.

ASHRAE members in Indiana can help support the adoption of our flagship energy standard in a couple of ways:

· Provide assistance on cost estimates for building to 90.1-2007 compared to the 1992 MEC

· Provide assistance on any energy modeling results you may have available for these 4 building types above

· Attend the upcoming commission meetings and voice your support for the adoption of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are well into March madness. St. Patrick's Day is rapidly approaching. That means that we should maybe start up our meetings again? I hope some of you will be able to spare an evening or a lunch time to come back and join us this month. This moth we are following a university theme.

SOUTH BEND LUNCH MEETING - March 19

For those of you in the South Bend area, Professor Edward Maginn (http://www.nd.edu/~ed/Home.html) from the venerable institution of Notre Dame will be speaking. Professor Maginn holds a Doctorate from UC, Berkeley. He started out at Proctor and Gamble after getting his BS from Iowa State. He has taught at Notre Dame since 1995. During this time he as received several awards including Teacher of the Year in 2006.

Professor Maginn will present on "Applications for Ionic Fluids - CO2 capture, absorptive cooling and waste heat utilization." Ionic liquids (http://www.nd.edu/~ed/Ionic_Liquids.html) are a fascinating class of materials. They are defined as pure salts whose melting point is below 100 C. Often, the melting point of an ionic liquid is well below room temperature. These substances typically exhibit a negligible vapor pressure and have high thermal stability. They can be designed to have excellent solvation properties for gases, polar species, aromatic molecules and polymers. Prof. Maginn and his team are investigating ionic for use in a number of applications. He will present on some applications as they pertain to fighting the global warming crisis and new possibilities in the HVAC industry.

CALUMET DINNER MEETING - March 26

For those of you in the Calumet area, we will be holding our meeting at Pudue University Calumet. At the university, they have a rapidly growing and active ASHRAE student chapter. As a professional chapter, we are supporting them as much as we can. Part of our support is in sponsoring their student memberships. We would also like to show them our support by holding a meeting on their turf, so to speak. The students will present on their current chapter activities. One of the more exciting projects the student chapter is involved in is developing an HVAC lab for the University.

Everyone is free to come to these meetings. Please come and invite friends as well.
