April Meeting - Ground Source Heat Pump Webcast

This month, our chapter will be participating in ASHRAE's annual webcast on April 21. This year the webcast is titled "Ground Source Heat Pump Systems – Putting the Earth to Work for You"
This is a chance to interact with leading heat pump experts and learn how site, climate, building, HVAC system and ground characteristics affect ground heat exchanger design, how ground source system design enhances efficiency, and how to avoid design and operations pitfalls. This free webcast is brought to you by the Chapter Technology Transfer Committee and sponsored by ClimateMaster, Mammoth, Taco, International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, and the ASHRAE Foundation. You can visit ASHRAE's webpage for further information.
Continuing education credits (PDH's), AIA credits, and USGBC credits can be earned by participating in this webcast.
Registration for this webcast is free. You may watch this at your own desk. But, why not join fellow engineers for lunch before and discussion afterward? We'll be setting up two viewing locations: one will be in South Bend and the other will be in Munster.
Joining us for lunch will cost $15. The webcast will occur between 1:00 and 4:00 pm EDT (12:00 to 3:00 pm CDT). Site locations will be announced in the next few days.
Also, coming up in May, we are excited to announce that we'll be hosting training for the new Indiana Energy Code. We are still working out the details on this. For now, we can say it will be held in Michigan City and will last from 1:00 and 5:00 pm EDT (12:00 to 4:00 pm CDT). Cost and location to be determined. Continuing education credits, AIA credits, and (possibly) USGBC credits can be earned by attending this. Please mark your calendar for what will be a very cost effective way to learn about the new Indiana Energy Code, earn continuing education credits, and networking.

November Meeting

This month we will be holding our typical two meetings.

SOUTH BEND LUNCH MEETING - November 19
For the lunch meeting, Louis van Belle of R.L. Millies & Associates will be giving a presentation on the Indiana Energy code. Indiana is looking to adopt ASHRAE 90.1-2007 as it's energy code to meet federal requirements. Mr. van Belle will be reviewing the process for new code adoption in the State of Indiana. He will also be reviewing the new envelope and mechanical efficiency requirements and the fiscal impact for new construction project of these requirements. Mr. van Belle is a licensed design engineer. He has been working at R.L. Millies for the past 5 years. He graduated from the University of Washington with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. Currently he is the president of the chapter.

CALUMET DINNER MEETING - November 19
For the dinner meeting, we'll be learning about energy recovery ventilators. With IAQ concerns in every facility and energy prices on the rise, what is a HVAC system designer to do? Energy recovery systems can bring in code required outside air and save energy doing it. Attendees will learn about key applications appropriate for using energy recovery, the different types of energy recovery equipment, how to select an energy recovery wheel, and how to calculate energy savings and ROI. The new ASHRAE 90.1 (addendum e) and ASHRAE 189.1 requirements for ERVs will also be discussed, as will Chicago code considerations.

Ryan Hoger is a Product Manager at HVAC Solutions, a TEC company. Mr. Hoger has been with TEC since 1997. He is the recent past president of the Illinois ASHRAE Chapter, which is the largest (1,000+ members) in the world. Ryan is actively in involved in several ASHRAE and USGBC committees and he is a LEED Accredited Professional. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Two Professional Development Hours (PDH) for State of Illinois PEs can be earned by attending the Calumet meeting.

We hope that you can join us to contribute to the discussion at our meeting. Anyone is invited. You do not need to be a member to attend!

February Meeting: LEED Energy Points for a Typical Office Building

After a long, sustained drought of meetings, there will finally be a meeting this month. This month will begin a series of presentations covering LEED related topics. More information about this will be posted later.

This month's presentation will explore the potential LEED Energy Savings points available for a typical office building. Various building insulation values and HVAC equipment efficiency options will be modeled through computer
simulations to determine potential energy savings above the ASHRAE 90.1-2004 energy standard. The presentation will also discuss the impact of lighting budgets and on-site renewable energy for energy reduction.

Our presenter will be Bill Hromada, P.E., partner in the consulting engineering firm, R.L. Millies and Associates, Inc. Bill has his BSME degree from Illinois Institute of Technology and has over 25 years experience in the HVAC industry. Bill has been past president for our Northern Indiana Chapter of ASHRAE.

Please invite anyone (wife, brother, mother, client, building owner, contractor, engineer, etc.). We are not an exclusive chapter. We hope that you can join us to contribute to the discussion.
