April Meeting - Ground Source Heat Pump Webcast

This month, our chapter will be participating in ASHRAE's annual webcast on April 21. This year the webcast is titled "Ground Source Heat Pump Systems – Putting the Earth to Work for You"
This is a chance to interact with leading heat pump experts and learn how site, climate, building, HVAC system and ground characteristics affect ground heat exchanger design, how ground source system design enhances efficiency, and how to avoid design and operations pitfalls. This free webcast is brought to you by the Chapter Technology Transfer Committee and sponsored by ClimateMaster, Mammoth, Taco, International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, and the ASHRAE Foundation. Continuing education credits (PDH's), AIA credits, and USGBC credits can be earned by participating in this webcast.
Registration for this webcast is free. You may watch this at your own desk. But, why not join fellow engineers for lunch before and discussion afterward? We'll be setting up two viewing locations: one will be in South Bend and the other will be in Munster.
Joining us for lunch will cost $15. The webcast will occur between 1:00 and 4:00 pm EDT (12:00 to 3:00 pm CDT). Site locations will be announced in the next few days.
Also, coming up in May, we are excited to announce that we'll be hosting training for the new Indiana Energy Code. We are still working out the details on this. For now, we can say it will be held in Michigan City and will last from 1:00 and 5:00 pm EDT (12:00 to 4:00 pm CDT). Cost and location to be determined. Continuing education credits, AIA credits, and (possibly) USGBC credits can be earned by attending this. Please mark your calendar for what will be a very cost effective way to learn about the new Indiana Energy Code, earn continuing education credits, and networking.

Energy Management in New and Existing Buildings: A Sustainable Activity

The Northern Indiana Chapter of ASHRAE is pleased to invite you to a Distinguished Lecturer event at our February 17 chapter meeting with a presentation by Richard J. Pearson, PE concerning

Energy Management in New and Existing Buildings: A Sustainable Activity

Buildings use 40% of US Energy, of which ONE THIRD IS EASILY SAVED. This presentation weaves together Energy Management principles, Energy Star Guidelines, and practical experience of successful energy managers. Illustrations of success are provided, to take advantage of the Energy Star "Portfolio Manager" for documented performance tracking and national recognition as an "Energy Star.” Several examples are: a Wisconsin hospital utilizing a simple process with daily feedback to reduce the cost of gas by $90,000; a Madison insurance company saved enough electricity to power 586 homes; a Madison convention center reduced energy use by 25%, and achieved a LEED EB rating; a Chicago elementary school used students in a science program to reduce daytime energy use by 15%.

Energy management is an orderly process in which a manager uses resources at his disposal to accomplish clear objectives. Sustained energy management is the quickest, cheapest, cleanest way to expand our world's energy supplies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Much of Dick Pearson's career has been spent in hands-on analysis and creative renovation of HVAC systems. He has been awarded the ASHRAE membership grade of Fellow for his pioneering work with building automation systems, and has received the Distinguished Service Award from ASHRAE.

Mr. Pearson is the principal contributor to several ASHRAE publications on energy use and management. Mr. Pearson is a regular presenter at professional development courses at the University of Wisconsin and elsewhere on subjects related to energy audits, HVAC design, energy management, system analysis, and renovation of buildings.

Mr. Pearson has worked on many significant Energy Efficiency projects including optimization a 7,000-ton and a 3,000-ton facility, tracking a $3.6 million utility bill, renovation of a 30-story art deco hotel, commissioning of eight thermal storage projects, and energy analysis of eleven buildings at a USMC base in Okinawa.

Mr. Pearson’s awards include First Place, Commercial Buildings, in the ASHRAE Region VI Energy Awards Program; First Place, Commercial Buildings, in the Illinois Chapter Energy Awards Program; Technology Award from ASHRAE Region VI; Excellence in Engineering Award from the Illinois Chapter of ASHRAE; and Distinguished Service Citation from the University of Wisconsin College of Engineering. He is a member of the National Register of Peer Professionals, and has been selected by the Chief Architect of the General Services Administration to conduct peer reviews of GSA projects.
